Our Press Release

Athlone residents can look forward to an even better shopping experience at the newly branded MA Powertrade Cash & Carry in Rylands.

The store relaunched on 18 April 2013, complete with new exterior signage, an upgraded interior and a renewed commitment to the people of Athlone. MA Cash & Carry has been part of the local community for the past 34 years and the new owners, Ishaaq and Ismail Kajee, who took over on 1 October 2012, are upbeat about the future of the store. “We saw good potential in this store from the beginning, with its location, customer base and offering,” says Ishaaq, adding that they also like the atmosphere of the store, created by the excellent relationship between the staff and the store’s customers. “We have every intention of continuing these good relationships and offering our customers, both existing and new, the very best service,” says Ishaaq.

After the sale went through and Ishaaq and Ismail took over, the brothers decided to join voluntary trading group Unitrade Management Services. “Unitrade offers a wide range of benefits to stores such as ourselves and joining the Group was in the best interests of MA Powertrade Cash & Carry,” explains Ishaaq.

Between them, Ishaaq and Ismail have a wealth of experience, in accounting and auditing, IT, finance and risk management at Divisional and Head Office levels, as well as wholesale and retail experience at store level. Ishaaq also has previous experience with UMS when he worked for one of the large corporate wholesale and retail chains for almost 12 years before him and his brother Ismail established a Private Equity Company to house various businesses amongst which is MA Powertrade Cash & Carry. “I got to know the company well during that time and was very impressed with what they offer,” he says.

Unitrade Management Services offers Independents all the benefits and value of belonging to a united group of independent wholesale outlets, while still being able to retain their own unique look and feel.UMS is the holding company of the well-known Powertrade and Food Town brands, which represent a multitude of independent wholesale and retail stores in urban and rural areas throughout South Africa, Swaziland, Namibia and Botswana.

“We planned our grand opening for the store for the past couple of months, together with the UMS Divisional team in our region, to market MA Powertrade Cash & Carry as a brand,” says Ishaaq, “so we
will be running excellent specials and promotions from Thursday 18 April until Sunday 5 May.
